The rural landscape in New Zealand is uniquely suited to sheep. The mild climate, plenty of rainfall in most areas and lots of land suitable for pastoral farming. The sheep are raised on their natural diet of fresh, lush and nutritious pastures. New Zealands sustainable agricultural practices today ensure that farming activities maintain and improve our natural resources of land, air and water for the generations to follow.
Our sheepskins are sourced from free-range farms, all over New Zealand. The skins arrive to us as a by-product of the food industry. After hand-selection we clean, preserve, soften and, if necessary, dye them. All in a environment friendly manner. The result is an incredibly soft sheepskin what can be enjoyed for years to come.
Post WW2 the business expanded into leather, calfskins, and foot ware. The company continued to make large scale investments in the 1970’s with tannery’s built in the lower South Island of New Zealand and Bendigo Australia. Export markets become the focus in the 1980’s with markets set up in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. By the late 1980’s Bowron had grown to become the largest woolskin tannery in the world and was acquired by Maruhachi Mawata Ltd of Japan in 1988.
The 1990’s proved to be a period of high growth and expansion for the company as factory investments were made in Thailand and Vietnam. In 2011, New Zealand suffered its worst natural disaster with a large-scale earthquake testing the resilience of the company and the country. In 2015 the company was acquired by Henan Prosper which has opened up new channels of markets and investments. The Bowron company remains strongly entranced in the region and the Woolston site continues to be the main headquarters and tanning facility for the company.
